Description Răzvan Sandu 2008-12-16 22:41:50 UTC
Description of problem:

On a system containing a Gigabyte GA-8LD533 rev. 1.0 mainboard we have an integrated Ethernet network card. The chipset is Realtek RTL8101L (the card is Gigabit-capable).

In system-config-network, the network card is "seen" erroneously as *two* FastEthernet devices, type "Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+", one of which cannot be configured. We have no network connection.

System is stock CentOS 5.2, with all online updates, as of December 16, 2008.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
kernel-2.6.18-92.1.18.el5

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install CentOS on a system containing this mainboard, with integrated network card.
2. Open system-config-network

Actual results:
Ethernet network card is "seen" erroneously; it cannot be properly configured.

Expected results:
Network card should allow configuration and perform normally.

Best regards,
Răzvan

The smolt profile of this system, *without* the integrated network card (which was administratively disabled from BIOS), is available here:

http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_c35a026d-1e57-40c4-b7f2-916b0524656c

Three other network cards were added:

- 2 pcs.  DLink DGE-528T, chipset DLink DLG10028C, Gigabit-capable;
- 1 pc. Edimax EN-9230TX-32, chipset Realtek RTL8169SC, Gigabit-capable.

For documenting hardware for this mainboard (hope it helps !), full output of "lspci -vvv" is:

Comment 2 Ivan Vecera 2009-05-22 15:15:33 UTC
The support for this chipset is included in RHEL 5.3. Did you try the kernel from this release?

Comment 3 Răzvan Sandu 2009-05-24 06:41:54 UTC
Hello,

Since these are *production* machines, usually located in isolated, remote places, I have no possibility to re-enable the integrated LAN and recheck.

But we've automatically upgraded fron CentOS 5.2 to CentOS 5.3 in all our network and didn't have the slightest problem with any network card, on any of our machines (which previously required a non-nofficial kernel, crafted for the RTL8168/8169 chipset).

So I suspect everything is OK now, this bug can be closed...

Many thanks,
Răzvan

OK, I'm closing this issue.
