Description Eli Wapniarski 2009-02-20 20:33:55 UTC
Feature Request

It would be good if when creating a document for to be used for email and the attached database is visible and records are selected that the mailmerge wizard would provide an option that would enable the user the merge the document against the selected fields.

NOTE: Filter is a great feature.

More to come tomorrow - sorry about all this.

dtardon->eli: I don't quite understand what you mean by that. If you want to use fields specific to your database in the document, you can always do it in step 6 of the mail merge wizard:

1. Click on Edit Document...
2. Insert->Fields->Other...
3. Go to tab Database
4. Select Type 'Mail merge fields'
5. Now you can see (and use) all available fields under 'Database selection'

I don't mean fields, I mean records. If I have a select number or records scattered througout the database, under so52 I am able to select records (10, 20, 100 etc) click on form letter and then I would have an option to be able to mailmerge to the selected records. I can't do that under OpenOffice.org. I can filter the records. but filtering lets say 100 records could be quite daunting.

Comment 3 David Tardon 2009-02-23 08:31:16 UTC
dtardon->eli: You can always create specialized address list in Base beforehand.

Comment 4 Eli Wapniarski 2009-02-23 08:57:10 UTC
That provides a fine temporary workaround. But it really isn't user friendly is it?

Comment 5 David Tardon 2009-02-23 09:51:56 UTC
dtardon->eli: There is Edit... button in the Select Address List... dialog, which, according to help, should enable you to edit the current address list; I think it's exactly what you want. Unfortunately, this button is always disabled (at least, it was disabled during all my tests).

Comment 6 Eli Wapniarski 2009-02-23 10:25:00 UTC
Actually for me it works and I can then create filters. However, try creating filters around a random data set. Lets say 10 or 20 or 100. Like I said. Its not very user friendly.

Re #5, I believe that's a problem with "flat" address books, patch filed upstream and checked into rawhide + F10 for that (http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=99541)

Comment 8 Caolan McNamara 2009-02-23 16:02:53 UTC
Re selecting records, the old mail merge is still there actually, you can retrieve it from tools->customize and bring it back into the menus. But it doesn't email mail-merge.

In that dialog it is possible to select entries, and it would be more useful to allow that in the current dialog as well. Moved upstream as http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=99543
