output of dmesg on a normal boot up

Description of problem:
I have a Dell Latitude e6400 with the nVidia graphics built-in.

Laptop has a DisplayPort connected to a Viewsonic LCD Monitor.

Attempt to start the computer. When X attempts to start up, the entire computer freezes indefinitely with a black screen (LCD on both monitors appear "off" not black if you know what I mean). I have to force the computer to turn off, and then turn it back on without DisplayPort connected in order to boot properly.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.5.3-15.fc10.x86_64
libX11-1.1.5-2.fc10.x86_64
kernel-2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.x86_64
kerneloops-0.12-1.fc10.x86_64
kernel-firmware-2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.noarch

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. when computer is off, plug a DisplayPort to DVI adapter into laptop DisplayPort
2. Connect other end of cable to DVI monitor
3. Boot Fedora 10

Actual results:
Kernel attempts to load normally. When X11 attempts to enter Gnome, LCDs both go dark (like it turns off). Computer completely hangs and nothing happens.

Expected results:
Computer should enter Gnome and user should be able to use Linux with DisplayPort Monitor connected.

Comment 1 Matěj Cepl 2009-05-06 15:07:27 UTC
I know it is cruel to ask you for it, but could we get /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/log/dmesg, /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if there is any), and /var/log/messages when DisplayPort IS connected as separate uncompressed attachments to this bug report, please?

THank you

Comment 2 ^mp3axe^ 2009-05-09 01:05:27 UTC
Is there anyway to write these to a USB stick on bootup?

Comment 3 Matěj Cepl 2009-05-11 23:23:42 UTC
Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Can you grab the kernel from http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=112420 and add "nouveau.modeset=1 nouveau.uscript=1" to your boot options. You'll hopefully see better behaviour there.

If not, with the same kernel and boot options, can you additionally add "drm.debug=1" and post your dmesg output for me?

Thanks.

Which RPMs do I need to install?

Comment 11 Ben Skeggs 2009-08-24 02:50:26 UTC
Any update here?

Comment 12 ^mp3axe^ 2009-08-24 03:39:50 UTC
I am having problems both installing the kernel on my box and also building a live cd with 2.6.29.6-209.rc1 kernel in it.

However, I did notice if I boot the latest released kernel with "nouveau.modeset=1 nouveau.uscript=1", the kernel reports invalid parameters, HOWEVER, it will not lock up and the screen shows up and F11 boots up in X without issues.

Comment 13 Ben Skeggs 2009-08-24 03:52:11 UTC
Ah very good, that's excellent to hear. Well, the issue will be fixed by default in F12 (all the code's in rawhide now) so I'll close this. In the meantime, that workaround will be fine!

When I upgrade to f12 rawhide, can still find this problem. But this time it seems relate to vga boot option. After I removed 'vga=0x361' from boot options, it boots up, but can still see the error message about nouveau before booting up.

Any idea?

What error message are you referring to?

which were observed also with rawhide kernel-2.6.31.5-117.fc12 when using KMS with nouveau. AFAIK 2.6.31.5-96.fc12.i686 used to show a lot of PGRAPH_ERROR messages but not lock up.

kernel-2.6.31.5-122.fc12.i686 is stable though even when KMS is enabled with the following adapter (Dell Inspiron 531s)

00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (rev a2)
