Description Peter Robinson 2009-04-23 21:37:40 UTC
I'm not sure if this is possible so its a query. I believe from a client printing perspective with cups printing to a network IPP printer you shouldn't need drivers but rather just the core cups bits. So it would be nice to be able be still able to print without having to install the massive foomatic plus deps (perl etc) for basic network printing support. The foomatic+perl deps make up around +65Mb of rpms (according to yum) which while not massive ends up making quite a large dep for the likes of a thin terminal, OLPC or a netbook with a 2Gb SSD (like a eeePC 701). I'm not sure if it would be possible to do a PackageKit style system that has been implemented for AV codecs and fonts if a user plugs in a printer to pop up a dialog to install foomatic so that its not a hard dep.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 11 development cycle.
Changing version to '11'.

This is a duplicate of bug #456906 really, in that once the PackageKit-style method is implemented the foomatic dependency can indeed be dropped.
