Description of problem:

GM45 laptop.  Start X with VGA disconnected.  Plug it in, xrandr -q, hey, it's there.  Disconnect, xrandr -q, cool, it's gone.  Plut it back in, xrandr -q, dang it, it's still gone.

Distressingly, once you restart X, the cycle repeats.
