Description Chris Negus 2001-08-09 06:45:35 UTC
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.2) Gecko/20010725

Description of problem:
I tried the playmidi and xplaymidi commands to play a midi file. They both
fail with the message "open /dev/sequencer: No such device". The
/dev/sequencer device does exist. Permission is 600. I tried it as a
regular user and as root. I changed permission to 666 and 777. No change.
Commands still fail.

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Type "playmidi file.mid" or "xplaymidi file.mid"
2.
3.

Actual Results: Message appears "open /dev/sequencer: No such device"
The command fails and exits.

Expected Results: Should have played the midi file.

Additional info:

changing user accounts and changing permissions on /dev/sequencer doesn't help.

Do you have a soundcard with a sequencer device (what sound card do you have?)

Comment 2 Chris Negus 2001-08-09 08:21:01 UTC
My sound card is a Creative Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97]. I can't find anything
in the documentation that mentions a sequencer device. The box says it has a
built-in MIDI interface, if that means anything.

Comment 3 Bill Nottingham 2001-08-09 15:08:24 UTC
That card does not have a HW midi synthesizer, so it doesn't have anything
playmidi could use.
