Description of problem:

First, two situations when mail-notification bothers/distracts the user when it shouldn't:

1) When the network is down it blinks. This is really annoying. I don't want a blinky thing telling me that I can't check my e-mail right now. I know the network is down. There is an icon right next to the mail-notification that tells me so. This state should not be more attention-grabbing than the much more important state of having unread mail. At most it should display a static icon for no network.

2) Every time the xguest user logs in (or anybody that hasn't configured a pop/imap/whatever account, but especially the xguest user) the mail notification configuration screen comes up. I installed mail-notification for my account, none of the other accounts on my system use it, and I can't get it to go away for them. When mail-notification is not configured with any mail accounts, it should _at most_ put an icon in the notification area about it, but should probably just hang out under preferences.


And one important way in which the user cannot control mail-notification:

3) It should be easy to disable mail-notification temporarily. Not being able to disable it at all without deleting my pop account settings makes me feel like I don't have control of my computer (like proprietary software). I suggest making it so you can right-click the notification icon, and there's a checkbox called "Enable mail notification" (like the NM icon, which has "Enable Networking" and "Enable Wireless".
