The current tetex setup in RH6.0 has a bug in the babel
subsystem which does hyphenation in american wrong.
As far as I know it is a problem with babel 3.6k and
it was fixed later.

The tetex-1.0.6 package from Raw Hide should fix Babel hyphenation
problems.
