works for me, after you make a choice what does your ~/.dmrc file say?

what are the permissions on that file?

if you move it out of the way, does your problem get "fixed" ?

I did a 'mv .dmrc .dmrc_old' and tried again, but no, GDM still defaults to Gnome.

And the write perms on the file are 0755, owner $USER.

also what session are you trying to log in to?  Can you attach the associated file from /usr/share/xsessions ?

I'm trying to log into KDE; the file contents are exactly the same.

strange, i wonder how "default" is getting written for session.  afaik, GDM won't ever write "default" in there.
