Description Michael Schmitz 2001-11-22 15:44:04 UTC
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.78 [en] (X11; U; Linux 2.4.14 i686; Nav)

Description of problem:
After upgrading to RH7.2 I had to install a patch to be able to compile the
VMware modules. While compiling works fine, starting the module which
provides bridged
networking fails (see attachement for more information). The problem
concerns initializing the network interface via "ifconfig". It's important
to note, that I can't reboot my system since any call to "ifconfig" blocks!

The problem definitely is somewhere in the patches you apply to the
standard kernel sources. As soon as I switched to a standard kernel (2.4.7
or 2.4.14), VMware worked fine.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot RH7.2 with either 2.4.7 or 2.4.9 kernel.
2. Install VMware 2.0.4
3. Unpack the vmware-ws-1142-for-2.4.7a.tar.gz patch
4. Start "runme.pl" (which is part of the patch archive)

Actual Results: While rebuilding the modules works fine, I starting
'/etc/rc.d/init.d/vmware start' fails:

  Starting VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor [ OK ]
     Virtual ethernet [ OK ]
     Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 [FAILED]
     Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background) [ OK ]

This is a VMWare bug which should be filed to vmware, not Red Hat. However
VMWare has newer modules out, which other people report work.

Please get the newest vmware modules from the vmware website, or look at
http://www-stu.christs.cam.ac.uk/~aia21/vmware/vmware2.stm

I already filed this bug to VMware a week ago, but I disagree with your opinion.
From my point of view it IS a bug in the kernels that come with RH72 since it
works with the standard kernels. The problem is one of the patches you include
in your kernel. However, I will try the patch you indicated and see what
happens.
