This may be related to my bug #56533 -- the Gateway E-3400 also has an Intel 815 motherboard according to the spec sheet. I never saw an automatic reboot, though, just the hangs I reported. Do you have the most current BIOS for the machine installed? Also, if you use lilo and specify lba32 in the lilo.conf, does it work? LILO with lba32 works fine. I currently have BIOS 1.2, it looks like there exists a 1.3 version. Could you try the test package at http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/grub/. If you install the package and then run `/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda` (or wherever you have grub installed other than /dev/hda) and let me know if that works better, it would be great Currently, we don't have this type of system in stock anymore (it was a system for a customer), but I expect to be able to test it again next week. The URL you specified is not accessible, b.t.w. Hrmm... indexes look to have been disabled on people, added an index.html to fix that. Yep, your grub-0.91-0.20020102.i386.rpm solves the problem!
