FWIW, laptop panel is 1680x1050; ext. monitor is 1920x1080

Smolt: http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_2634062e-aec5-4bdc-8f9e-2c8464ad2a7a

How to reproduce
-----
1. Connect an external monitor to my laptop while using Metacity/GNOME panel
2. Open Desktop Effects and try to start GNOME shell
3. GNOME Shell craps its undies, and get dumped back into Metacity
4. Turn to your poor girlfriend, who has to listen to you whine about how you can't get two monitors going with GNOME shell lovin'
