I believe the problem that you're experiencing is the result of being behind a firewall that is blocking all outgoing traffic unless specifically allowed.

I'm experiencing the same difficulty at work, while at home I have no trouble at all.

I will be forwarding this upstream and see if I can find out what ports are being used to access google site.

I requested some help from google groups. Perhaps someone there can provide some insight:

Summation of Diagnostics so far:

I've eliminated the firewall at work by giving the computer that I'm running on full permission for all incoming and outgoing traffic (temporarily for the purpose of testing). I've also tested a different IP from a completely different carrier (backup ineternet connection) to see if the somehow google was blocking the IP. Same results.

On further investigation, I have managed to test this on a x86_64 installation and on an i686 installation in the same networking environment at work. The x86_64 based system it works. On the i686 based system it does not.

Could you please tell me what your installation is. It is an x86_64 or i686 based installation

Comment 6 Artem 2010-10-07 09:26:57 UTC
x86_64

Comment 7 Eli Wapniarski 2010-10-07 17:31:43 UTC
K... That gets rid of one "weird bug" hypothesis

Comment 8 Artem 2010-10-28 13:05:41 UTC
Hi Eli.
My code analysis showed, that google's response format had changed. And actually this is fixed in v1.30. Please update package to the latest version and problem would disappear (I have verified this by making custom build).

Comment 9 Eli Wapniarski 2010-10-28 17:51:37 UTC
This is weird... The current version in the repo is 1.30.

I will have to check this

Comment 10 Eli Wapniarski 2010-10-31 12:49:58 UTC
SOB!!!

Thank you for that... And I'm real sorry for not noticing that what was in Fedora's repo was 1.21.

I could have sworn that we were right up to date.

I will be working on this as soon as humanely possible.

Thank you once again Artem. For your patience and persistence.

I feel like a complete moron :(. I should have noticed the update and did not.

I apologize most profusely

The updated version is being pushed to testing and I will push to stable as soon as the system will allow it.

Thanks so very much.
