log from boot without nomodeset none

Description James Cassell 2010-10-17 18:32:49 UTC
Description of problem:
My ThinkPad T61 requires the nomodeset kernel parameter in F14 (TC1.1, plus updates as of , whereas it worked like a charm with F13. The same with the installer.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-0.0.16-13.20101010git8c8f15c.fc14.x86_64
kernel-2.6.35.6-43.fc14.x86_64

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install F14 (can only be done with nomodeset)
2. Boot
3. get rid of nomodeset from grub line
4. reboot
5. watch it have a seizure and be left at the end of the boot log on VT1

Actual results:
it has a seizure and doesn't show the Gnome login screen; it only shows the kernel boot log

Expected results:
kernel mode setting should work as it did in F13

Additional info:
My video card is the nVidia Quadro NVS 140M.

Also, I'm guessing that xorg-x11-drv-nouveau is the correct component.

That's odd, and shouldn't be the case at all. Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and dmesg output after a failed non-nomodeset boot?

log from boot without nomodeset

it also seizures with the nomodeset, but settles and I get the gnome logon screen.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log attached

don't know if it makes any difference, but my screen is 1680x1050

Comment 4 Ben Skeggs 2010-10-18 05:48:07 UTC
Please delete your xorg.conf and see if things improve. It looks like X has been explicitly configured to use the vesa driver, not nouveau.

Comment 5 James Cassell 2010-10-18 14:15:19 UTC
things work fine after deleting xorg.conf. This was a fresh install done with the TC1.1 netinst ISO, which didn't work unless I did the "with basic video driver" option. Maybe that put vesa in my xorg.conf... I'll test again when new installation media is available.

Comment 6 Ben Skeggs 2010-10-18 22:40:42 UTC
Ok, I presume somehow the image you used had a broken kernel that required basic video driver, which does indeed write a vesa xorg.conf. I'll leave this set as needinfo until you can test with newer installation media, and if it still happens, I'll reassign it there.

Comment 7 James Cassell 2010-10-21 13:54:03 UTC
I re-tested with F14 TC6, and everything seems to work fine. The graphical install without the "basic video driver" works as expected. I'll close this now.
