To address problems with iSCSI root devices not being checked with the fsck utility, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 introduced the "_rnetdev" mount option. However, this functionality was missing in the package for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. With this update, the mount utility has been updated to support this option.

Description Dave Maley 2010-10-19 18:44:34 UTC
Created attachment 454409 [details]
util-linux-ng-2.17-rnetdev.patch

Description of problem:
Start of kdump service fails in RHEL6 iSCSI boot environment. The kdump
service starts successfully in RHEL5 when _rnetdev option is specified for
/boot in fstab.

The _rnetdev mount option was added in RHEL5.2 to address problems where the
iscsi root device never got fscked. The _rnetdev support added to util-linux in
5.2 (bug 435722) is missing from util-linux-ng in RHEL6.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
util-linux-ng-2.17.2-6.el6

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. setup system w/ iSCSI boot environment
2. configure kdump (if not auto-enabled)
3. reboot (if crashkernel memory not already reserved)

Actual results:
kdump service fails to start

Expected results:
kdump service starts successfully

Comment 3 Karel Zak 2010-10-19 21:32:11 UTC
Grr... the patch has never been added to Fedora or upstream. It was always RHEL specific.

Comment 4 Dave Maley 2010-10-20 15:45:10 UTC
note: the support for _rnetdev in util-linux was added to 5.2 in order to fix fsck on iscsi root devs (bug 435722). However the customer who reported it against RHEL6 noticed it because it broke kdump in their iscsi boot environment. I've updated the summary to (hopefully) more accurately describe this bug report.
