Description Dave Maley 2010-10-19 19:06:21 UTC
Description of problem:
Start of kdump service fails in RHEL6 iSCSI boot environment. The kdump
service starts successfully in RHEL5 when _rnetdev option is specified for
/boot in fstab.

The _rnetdev mount option was added in RHEL5.2 to address problems where the
iscsi root device never got fscked. The _rnetdev support added to anaconda in
5.2 (bug 435716) is missing from anaconda in RHEL6.

I've located the commit which added _rnetdev in RHEL5:
http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=anaconda.git;a=commit;h=bb093dbb064710cf99c6fd7eabb1e7eed5b4235b

..however the relevant code has changed significantly between RHEL5's anaconda and RHEL6 and I'm not familiar enough w/ it to port the patch.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
anaconda-13.21.82-1.el6

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. setup system w/ iSCSI boot environment
2. configure kdump (if not auto-enabled)
3. reboot (if crashkernel memory not already reserved)

Actual results:
kdump service fails to start

Expected results:
kdump service starts successfully

Comment 2 Dave Maley 2010-10-20 15:41:39 UTC
note: the support for _rnetdev in anaconda was added to 5.2 in order to fix fsck on iscsi root devs (bug 435716). However the customer who reported it against RHEL6 noticed it because it broke kdump in their iscsi boot environment. I've updated the summary to (hopefully) more accurately describe this bug report.

Comment 3 Chris Lumens 2010-10-21 19:12:04 UTC
The pre-RHEL6 commit that explicitly removed _rnetdev is:

commit 1edec1afdf9e98b912048f35c8da4970166e7c7f
Author: Hans de Goede <hdegoede>
Date: Fri Mar 20 10:51:33 2009 +0100

Do not use _rnetdev as fstab option for network based /

In RHEL-5 we use _rnetdev for network based /, and various pieces
of the RHEL-5 initscripts key of on this to do special things. So I thought
it would be good to do the same in Fedora. Testing has revealed that
Fedora's mount command cannot handle this options on things go boom,
so use plain _netdev for / just like we do with other network based fs, and
as we've been doing in previous Fedora releases.

Given that, can you confirm that adding _rnetdev works all the way through the bootup process, not just that kdump starts? If so, it should be simple enough to revert this commit on rhel6-branch.

Comment 4 Dave Maley 2010-10-21 19:29:09 UTC
Hi Chris - The mount support for _rnetdev got lost in the rhel/fedora shuffle (see bug 644503). I'm fairly certain the customer verified kdump startup via a full reboot however I'll ask for confirmation ....

Comment 5 Dave Maley 2010-11-02 21:10:10 UTC
Hi Chris - We've received confirmation from the customer that, w/ the _rnetdev mount support present (bug 644503), their system competes bootup successfully.

Cheers!
~Dave

Tested with anaconda-13.21.109 and / on iSCSI. fstab contains the _rnetdev option and the system is able to fully boot into runlevel 3.
