note: the support for _rnetdev in anaconda was added to 5.2 in order to fix fsck on iscsi root devs (bug 435716). However the customer who reported it against RHEL6 noticed it because it broke kdump in their iscsi boot environment. I've updated the summary to (hopefully) more accurately describe this bug report. The pre-RHEL6 commit that explicitly removed _rnetdev is:
commit 1edec1afdf9e98b912048f35c8da4970166e7c7f
Author: Hans de Goede <hdegoede>
Date: Fri Mar 20 10:51:33 2009 +0100
Do not use _rnetdev as fstab option for network based /
In RHEL-5 we use _rnetdev for network based /, and various pieces
of the RHEL-5 initscripts key of on this to do special things. So I thought
it would be good to do the same in Fedora. Testing has revealed that
Fedora's mount command cannot handle this options on things go boom,
so use plain _netdev for / just like we do with other network based fs, and
as we've been doing in previous Fedora releases.
Given that, can you confirm that adding _rnetdev works all the way through the bootup process, not just that kdump starts? If so, it should be simple enough to revert this commit on rhel6-branch.
Hi Chris - The mount support for _rnetdev got lost in the rhel/fedora shuffle (see bug 644503). I'm fairly certain the customer verified kdump startup via a full reboot however I'll ask for confirmation .... Hi Chris - We've received confirmation from the customer that, w/ the _rnetdev mount support present (bug 644503), their system competes bootup successfully. Cheers! ~Dave This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux maintenance release. Product Management has requested further review of this request by Red Hat Engineering, for potential inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Update release for currently deployed products. This request is not yet committed for inclusion in an Update release. Tested with anaconda-13.21.109 and / on iSCSI. fstab contains the _rnetdev option and the system is able to fully boot into runlevel 3.
