Well, doesn't that mean that the installation media indeed does contain errors? Do you have any logs available from the installation, such as would explain the nature of the "fatal error"? Also, reassigning to distribution, they might have better ways to debug this sort of thing. I don't believe it's in the tzdata package itself. At this time I do not see how to get additional diagnostics. Is the f12 system up-to-date before starting the upgrade? You should be able to get to the anaconda logs via tty2 when it fails. Please attach all the /tmp/*log files to this bug. Yes, a yum install was run on the FC12 machine before preupgrade was attempted. This is an error in one of the package's scriptlets that we can't see without the logs asked for in comment #3. ls -l of /tmp/*.log
Anaconda's log ends in "Preparing to install packages", yum ends in "Depsolve time: 59.679". Both of these took place at 15:10-ish. In syslog, there's a bunch of ATA errors at 15:25-ish:

I'm sticking with my bad-media theory. Dunno what's on your ata1, but that cannot be good.

Created attachment 455596 [details] Screen shot of the failure Description of problem: I ran preupgrade on FC12 and got to the step where a reboot is required to complete the installation. A number of packages were successfully installed, see attached jpg, until tzdata-2010k-1.fc13.noarch was attempted. Its failure to install caused the following error message: Error Installing Package A fatal error occurred when installing the tzdata package. This could indicate errors when reading the installation media. Installation cannot continue. Exit installer. As per the message above the installation stopped and the upgrade to FC 13 could not complete. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): tzdata-2010k-1.fc13.noarch How reproducible: Attempted 3 times and it failed at the installation of tzdata-2010k-1.fc13.noarch each time Steps to Reproduce: 1. run preupgrade on FC 12 after yum update 2. reboot as per on screen instructions 3. wait until 39 of 1523 packages are installed, in my case, and the tzdata failure will occur. Actual results: Upgrade to FC 13 fails and is incomplete. Expected results: No installation failure on tzdata-2010k-1.fc13.noarch and the installer runs to a normal completion in which FC 13 is fully installed Additional info:
