I verified written image after burning and also verified the disk during installation and both tests passed.

Did you run out of space on vg0-var? It looks like a 6G partition. If that isn't the problem then it really does look like some kind of media error. I don't see any kernel errors, so it isn't a drive failure.

Did not run out of space on /var. Also tried to upgrade via 'preupgrade' command and had the same error on the same package. After downloading the packages to /var there was about 1G free. I have not had any errors on the drives, hard or optical.

FWIW, I blew away the var/cache/yum/i386/14 directory and then upgraded from the DVD; even though I had previously given up on preupgrade and tried to install from DVD, apparently YUM was still looking at the cache directory and some of the files there (for me it was fontpackages-filesystem-...) had 0 size, so it refused to read them off the DVD...
