1. I asked to shut the machine down

Comment

Loged out, gnome-settings-daemon didn't shut down normally (killed by the "Log out anyway" window)

Bug 659449 appears to be a duplicate of this one.

I booted up Rawhide, and got a black background on the GDM screen. I logged in and everything seemed okay, so I ran abrt-gui as root to see if something had crashed. I found that g-s-d had indeed crashed, with a backtrace that looks like the one in this report.

The crash is happening because g-s-d is exiting, and glibc is doing the atexit/on_exit function pointer handling, but some function on the list doesn't exist. That is, the address on the list is not currently mapped.

The memory map in /var/spool/abrt for my crash looks like the one in this report. But it is slightly different from the one that is running as I am logged in as a normal user. It is missing /usr/lib64/libORBit-2.so.0.1.0, which does register a function with atexit, namely shutdown_orb. Is there some way that libORBit could have been dlclose()d, but left shutdown_orb sitting on the atexit list?

ORBit installs an atexit() handler to clean up GConf connections, but we don't use GConf in the main binary, only in the plugins that have been unloaded by then. Worked around in gnome-settings-daemon master.

main: Fix possible crasher on exit

Because ORBit sucks, and installs an atexit() handler, even though
    it doesn't need one.
