Description Horst H. von Brand 2011-01-14 21:38:23 UTC
Description of problem:
Go to the local cups webpage, to printers and select one. There are two drop-down menus, Mantenance and Administration. Selecting an operation from either gives no feedback about the operation. Was it even attempted? Did it work or fail?

Some of the other pages have the same problem, but this is most acute here as this is supposed to be the way to troubleshoot and manage the printers.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
cups-1.4.6-2.fc15.x86_64 (but this hasn't changed in ages)

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:

Not sure I mean the same as you,
but to me the current feedback seems pretty sufficient.

I mean messages like e.g.

Printer command job processing
"Invalid printer command "Clean"!"
Printer ... is no longer accepting jobs.
Printer ... is now accepting jobs.
Printer ... has been purged of all jobs.
Printer ... has been modified successfully.
Error: ...

Horst: are you running Firefox on the same machine as CUPS, or on a different machine? Do you have cookies disabled?

Same machine. AFAIK, cookies aren't disabled, but I don't know how to check in detail.

Haven't seen any of those. Just the notification by the printer changes.

Try this, as root:

cupsctl LogLevel=debug2
service cups restartlog

Now try to use the web interface as before, selecting e.g. Modify Printer from the Administration drop-down. After doing so, stop CUPS:

service cups stop

and attach /var/log/cups/error_log to this bug report. It may be quite large so it would be as well to 'gzip' it first.

Afterwards you can turn off debugging like this:

service cups start
cupsctl --no-debug-logging

Created attachment 473888 [details]
Gzipped /var/log/error_log after doing as told

Clicking on "Modify printer" just makes that the selected option, nothing else happens.

Perhaps you have Javascript disabled?

Doh... didn't think of that. Yep, that works.

Sorry for wasting your time. Perhaps NoScript should not block on localhost?

Wait a minute. Why was I then able to add a new printer via the local CUPS page just now, which led to the same (or very similar) menu page?

Thanks!

Add printer uses explicit submit buttons. The Modify/Admin drop-downs use Javascript to submit the form.
