Description Rik Theys 2011-01-17 08:14:49 UTC
Description of problem:

After a few minutes, plasma desktop starts using a complete core. At first the system tray remains functional but after a while, it no longer responds to clicks and the clock will no longer update. Sometimes after a few minutes, it will respond again and process all clicks made.

The plasma-desktop process crashes after a while and automatically respawns.

When plasma desktop is using the cpu, an strace shows constant reading of /etc/localtime and /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Brussels (my timezone).

I've already removed all widgets from my desktop and the system tray only has the basic widgets. This doesn't seem to help.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

I've had this problem ever since the upgrade to the 4.5 series. 4.4 and before never had this problem.

How reproducible:

Always on my account. Other users don't seem to be able to reproduce this, with the same widgets added.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Log in
2. run top to see the plasma-destop process start to use a lot of cpu time.
3.

Actual results:

plasma-desktop uses a lot of cpu and crashes frequently (about 8 times a day)

Expected results:

low plasma-desktop cpu usage and no crashes.

Additional info:

Comment 1 Rik Theys 2011-01-17 10:04:39 UTC
The CPU usage seems to drop when I remove the digital clock from my panel. The only change I made to the digital clock settings is set the calendar to Belgium Dutch to have the local holidays marked on the calendar.

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-16 21:11:17 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 14 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
