Description kanda.motohiro 2011-01-18 15:44:32 UTC
Description of problem:
It took a few days for me to hear a sound with Qtractor and FluidSynth.

Rosegarden has a very good step-by-step JACK setup section.
9.2.1. Setup JACK and Qsynth

On the other hand, after a few day's struggle with pulse audio, ALSA and JACK,
I was astonished to find
8.3.3. Using JACK with Qtractor
said
'Qtractor's "MIDI" tab displays the devices on QjackCtl's
"ALSA" tab.'
This is somewhat counter-intuitive and readers should be warned much loudly.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Qtractor and FluidSynth.
2. Connections - Qtractor MIDI tab shows Qtractor in/out port.
3. Connections - JACK MIDI tab shows only qsynth input port.
4. You cannot connect two via JACK.

I see the problem, and I also noticed it while I was writing the Guide last summer. Personally, I think this inconsistency is a software bug that should be sorted out by the developer of Qtractor and QjackCtl, who is the same person. I do not, however, think that this is worthy of an admonition (big star highlighting the point), because it is not dangerous to a user's computer - just an inconvenience.

I recommend reporting this to the Qtactor bug-tracker, which is available from the project's Sourceforge page here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/qtractor/

As for setting up JACK/Qsynth with Qtractor, I think you're right in suggesting that the Qtractor chapter could use a section about this. I will think about the best way to do this, and report back on this bug when there is a draft available for you to look at.

I reported this upstream to the Qtractor bug tracker on SourceForge. Over the next few days, I'll develop a solution for the Musicians' Guide until the Q* product is fixed.

Comment 3 Christopher Antila 2011-06-26 17:40:16 UTC
The upstream developer is not interested in addressing the user interface issue. The previously-posted link does not work; use this instead.

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3317607&group_id=135501&atid=733077

I will put a big warning in the relevant Musicians' Guide chapter.

Comment 4 Christopher Antila 2011-06-26 19:08:29 UTC
I revised the Qtractor chapter, adding an "Important" admonition, as initially requested.

See http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora_Draft_Documentation/0.1/html/Musicians_Guide/sect-Musicians_Guide-Qtractor-Configuration.html

Thanks. Even if Qtractor developer will not fix the GUI,
next time when a poor novice user like me has the same problem, he will be able to ask Google, find this bugzilla page and your revised guide, and find the right way much easily, I hope.
Please close this case.
