You have to use the force option for both restart and reload if a session is logged in. restart prints a error message. reload does not, but should print something and return a error. Adding devel ack to fix this in 6.1. This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux maintenance release. Description of problem: working with rhel6 based storage server, with tgtd, I have noticed a behaviour which goes as follows: I have a target that consist a list of devices, but when I add a new device under it, and reload the service, device is not recognized (exposed) after tgtd reload. I see it with: tgtadm --mode target --op show however, when I issue service force-restart, device as added to the list under that target, and I can connect to it successfully. repro steps: 1) create new target with 2 devices - see below: <target Test> allow-in-use yes <backing-store /dev/vg_openfiler03/scale0> scsi_id REDHAT SCALE0 scsi_sn scale0 </backing-store> <backing-store /dev/vg_openfiler03/scale1> scsi_id REDHAT SCALE1 scsi_sn scale1 </backing-store> </target> 2) reload service - make sure lv is now opened (by configuration) 3) edit conf file again - append new device - see below: <target Test> allow-in-use yes <backing-store /dev/vg_openfiler03/scale0> scsi_id REDHAT SCALE0 scsi_sn scale0 </backing-store> <backing-store /dev/vg_openfiler03/scale1> scsi_id REDHAT SCALE1 scsi_sn scale1 </backing-store> <backing-store /dev/vg_openfiler03/scale2> scsi_id REDHAT SCALE2 scsi_sn scale2 </backing-store> </target> 4) reload service - run tgtadm --mode target --op show == device is not there 5) force-restart service - run same == device is there.
