Immediate crash is definitely not a normal behaviour--we would know fast if it were :) It is on a fresh start, or when OO.o is running already? If on start, does it crash right away? Or after the splash screen is shown? Or on recovery dialog, perhaps? Does it help if you move ~/.openoffice.org away?

Ouch, I believe this was the result of a full or nearly full file system. Sorry for the disturbance.
