Description of problem: just finished loading Fedora 14 on my laptop and noticed that it heats up rather quickly. Lm-sensors shows both CPU sensors and no fans. pwmconfig will not work on this laptop. The fan runs very slow if not at all. I get the fan once I restart it and the bios takes over, but as soon as Fedora loads the fan stops. After several restarts the fan may stay on. I have tried various monitors and commands lines trying to get the fan to come on. I am at a loss!

How reproducible: every startup


Steps to Reproduce:
1. after bios and splash screen fan turns off or runs slow
2. several restarts fan may stay on or run very slow
3. sensors command shows both CPU sensors operating, no fan control noticed.
  
Actual results: machine overheats and shuts down


Expected results: fan controlled by OS


Additional info: lm sensors loaded, sensors-detect works, sensors shows machine
getting hot, no fan information displayed. Yet one I back out of Fedora the fan
comes back on.

Can you please provide some more info on the machine in question (brand, model, chipset, etc.).

Also lm_sensors only does monitoring by default (pwmconfig and the control scripts are not used by default), and your BIOS should leave your fans in a sane state after POST / your ACPI implementation should control them.

Have you tried upgrading your BIOS?

Moving this over to the kernel since this is a kernel issue.

Sorry it took so long to get this to you, 

acer laptop aspire 7720, dual core 1.6ghz, intel chipset, the system will get hot enough to shut itself down. Once restarted the CPU fan comes back on and will stay on if the cpu is hot enough to keep it on. I have not tried updating the bios yet, I will try it this week....

Did you ever try updating the BIOS and is this still an issue with the latest f14 or f15 kernel?
