There are kernel meesages in the log, after initially hanging it seemed to exit X.org back to the console where several nouveau messages came up. After about 30 seconds or so, went back into X.org and the system was frozen.

Upon reboot, the system fell back to metacity. Firefox and all attempted applications seem to be working fine without gnome shell

How to reproduce
-----
1. boot rawhide liveusb (built 20110203)
2. log in as livecd user
3. Attempt to launch firefox from activities in gnome shell

When I clicked the link, the Shell fell over; it auto-restarted itself, and when it was done, Firefox was showing the linked page, so the signal obviously got through.

Hardware is an NVIDIA 9400 GT [10de:0641] , current Rawhide nouveau and kernel (2.6.38.git3 or some such)

Comment 6 Adam Williamson 2011-02-04 19:39:05 UTC
Package: mutter-2.91.6-2.fc15
Architecture: x86_64

How to reproduce
-----
1. I wasn't doing anything in particular, just normal use: Firefox, Evo, Xchat
2. System behaved very sluggishly for a few minutes and then Shell crashed

setting high priority as several of us are hitting this; adding Ben to CC in case it's a nouveau issue. Other testers, are you all using NVIDIA cards? Which ones? Mine is:

[adamw@adam spin-kickstarts (master)]$ lspci -nn | grep -i nvidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] [10de:0641] (rev a1)

This seems to be fixed in alpha tc2 - if so this bug can be closed?

Comment 18 Owen Taylor 2011-05-25 21:44:44 UTC
Any further duplicates would be reported against gnome-shell, since that's now the toplevel binary. There are some nouveau-related crashes there, but it's hard to tell if they are duplicates of this or not, since we never had a good backtrace. I'm closing this bug since I don't think we'll be able to proceed further on it.
