photograph of gdm login screen

Description of problem:
vt-switching or display resizing on a Radeon 3100 (hp-dc5850-01.rhts.bos.redhat.com) causes corruption of the display in the form of incorrect colors. X server restart will fix the problem; nothing less will suffice. Screenshots don't capture the corruption.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
First noted in RHEL 4.9, confirmed not a regression through retesting in 4.8, in which it's similarly broken.

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Ctrl-Alt-F1 from desktop or gdm
2. Ctrl-Alt-F7
-or-
1. xrandr -s 640x480
-or-
1. gnome-display-properties
2. change resolution

Actual results:
Trippy colors, like the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey

Expected results:
Same colors as previously

Additional info:
RHEL 4 unsurprisingly falls back to vesa with this video hardware, which is significantly newer than RHEL 4.

No further non-security updates are planned for xorg-x11 in RHEL4. If this issue is not addressed in RHEL5 or newer, please update the affected product version and reopen this bug.
