Description Wendell Baker 2011-02-05 17:32:08 UTC
Description of problem:

The abrt-applet is 900MB over time. This contributes to the machine bogging down to the point of near unusability

See also nm-applet
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675442

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

$ rpm -q -f /usr/bin/abrt-applet
abrt-gui-1.1.14-1.fc13.i686

How reproducible:

sure.

Actually reproducing this would require another few weeks of login and activity. So I'm gonna say it is reproducible because it's a background secular growth that "just happens"

Steps to Reproduce:
1. login to GNOME in 2010-12
2. stay logged in
3. take lotsa crashes, work with them, report the bugs.
4. observe the size in 2011-02

Actual results:

abrt-applet is 900MB

Expected results:

abrt-applet should weigh 100MB

Additional info:

On the machine in question, I logged in in 2010-12.

$ ps -lef | grep abrt | sort -n -k 10
0 S wbaker   28981 27113  0  80   0 -  1090 pipe_w 09:24 pts/10   00:00:00 grep abrt

0 S wbaker   22445 22073  0  80   0 - 233767 poll_s 2010 ?        00:00:06 abrt-applet

$ bc
scale=6
233767*4096/1024^3
.891750

SZ=890MB

On another (Fedora 14) machine nearby, I logged in to GNOME on 2011-01-31 Here the weight of abrt-applet is "small" ... 100MB.

$ ps -lef | grep abrt
5 S root      2173     1  0  80   0 -  8212 poll_s Jan24 ?        00:00:45 /usr/sbin/abrtd
0 S wbaker   11343 11068  0  80   0 - 27012 poll_s Jan31 ?        00:00:00 abrt-applet

$ bc
scale=6
27012*4096/1024^2

SZ=100MB

Comment 2 Bug Zapper 2011-05-30 11:31:19 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '13'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 3 Bug Zapper 2011-06-27 12:19:32 UTC
Fedora 13 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2011-06-25. Fedora 13 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
