Description David Le Sage 2011-02-24 04:35:36 UTC
Description of problem:
Using Fedora 15, I cannot record any footage via my webcam. When I stop "recording", Cheese crashes.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 15 Live CD Nightly Build 23/2/2011

How reproducible:
Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot the live CD.
2. Log into GNOME Shell.
3. Launch Cheese.
4. Switch to video recording tab.
5. Webcam light comes on but Cheese "viewfinder" remains black.
6. Click "Start Recording."
7. Nothing Happens.
8. Click "Stop Recording."
9. App crashes.

Actual results:
Cannot record footage, followed by an application crash.

Expected results:
To be able to record footage.

Additional info:
Smolt hardware profile (don't know if this captures much info for webcam hardware):

http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_97f2bc7d-2209-49fd-885d-3ce26fe9b1f4

The webcam co-operates with Cheese when I run Fedora 14.

Abrt registered the crash but since I was running from the live CD, I was not able to download the debug files and produce a report from that tool for you.

Comment 1 David Le Sage 2011-03-01 02:46:55 UTC
I have now installed Fedora 15 Alpha on a machine. After you click "Stop Recording", you must switch back to the Photo mode to trigger the crash.

Unfortunately, abrt cannot produce a usable backtrace.

I'm having a similar issue. After pressing "Record a Video", a video file is created, but "recording" stops after a second or so, and the preview pane freezes. The video files created are usually 0-byte files, but some are as large as 18k or so. In totem, however, they are 0 seconds long. Pressing "Stop Recording" causes the app to freeze. Running from the command line, the output below is generated. The four identical gstreamer warnings occur on program startup, when pressing the video button, when pressing "Record a Video" and when the video preview freezes.

Unfortunately cheese in F-15 <= 3.0.1 has several known issues which causes it to crash in various ways. Upstream has recently released 3.0.2 which fixes these known issues, and we've prepared an update for F-15 for this.

Unfortunately due to the issues with the earlier release we've quite a few open (abrt) crash bugs against cheese for F-15. Too many to go through them one by one and verify that they are actually a variant of one of the known and fixed issues. Therefore we are closing all the F-15 cheese crash bugs.

You can upgrade to the 3.0.2 update by running the following command from a terminal:
su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing cheese'

If you still experience the same crash as before (or a new one), please do file a bug and we will try to investigate!
