Description of problem:
I'm running the tests from the last radeon test day, currently working through https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Testcase_radeon_xv
The test works fine for the first 5 steps on the fallback desktop.

For step 6, I try to start a compositing desktop.
"gnome-shell --replace" doesn't work "Failed to initialize Clutter"
"compiz-gtk --replace" crashes the X server. I can't get to the point of running totem in a compositing desktop.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.14.0-2.20110204gita27b5dbd9.fc15.i686

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. See aformentioned testcase

Actual results:
gnome-shell won't start
compiz-gtk crashes the X server while starting

Expected results:
Either desktop to be launched.

Additional info:
On this particular system
( http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_b6251cea-5374-49a0-8b8c-7c7dd75f6c73 )
I can't login using gdm (which I have reported in bug 680453), so in order to continue with the tests, I have started from runlevel 3 and run startx from there (as an ordinary user, not root). Perhaps that may be relevant to this problem.

I have attached Xorg.0.log from right after the compiz-gtk crash.

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, and attach

* your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available),
* X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)
* output of the dmesg command, and
* system log (/var/log/messages)

to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Comment 2 info@kobaltwit.be 2011-05-04 12:43:45 UTC
The situation has changed since I have reported this bug. Recent updates to a lot of packages have resulted in a successful use of gnome shell on this system. The video test works fine in gnome shell now.

Just for testers I tried to run compiz-gtk --replace from within gnome shell. This caused an error message to pop up indicating that something had gone wrong and I should log back in. Does it even make sense to attempt to run compiz-gtk --replace when gnome shell is running ?

Or put differently, do you want me to attach several files as requested in comment 1, given the situation is different from the original report ?

Comment 3 Elad Alfassa 2011-05-04 13:04:29 UTC
Closing.
(Running compiz-gtk --replace from gnome-shell doesn't make sense, you need to run it from fallback mode if you want compiz).
