Description David Le Sage 2011-03-07 06:12:09 UTC
Description of problem:
Owen, just a general comment. After having used GNOME Shell for a week and a half now, the part that I am finding to have quite poor usability is the Notifications/System Tray area. This is due mainly to the fact that the icon targets are quite small and they slide along as you hover the mouse near them, making them a moving target.

If I have an app like Liferea or Rhythmbox running and I want to access it from there, I have to hover the mouse at the bottom of the screen in the right area (and it can sometimes be a *little* unresponsive, then I have to move the mouse over the items until the right one flies out, and then I have to click on the small icon as clicking on its name does nothing.

If the whole name of the app in that area were clickable, instead of just the icon, that would be an improvement as would making the icons slightly bigger. I am not sure what else could be done in that area but I do not like the way the app flies out to reveal its name because, as stated above, this makes it a moving target.

I realise usability is a subjective area but I feel this part of the system could definitely do with some more polish.

Otherwise, I am quite enjoying most aspects of GNOME 3. :-)

rpm -q gnome-shell
gnome-shell-2.91.92-3.fc15.x86_64

Now in the latest version, you don't have to click on the icon and click on any part of the name for the same action. Does this solve the complaint?

Yes, that will make a big difference. Thanks, Rahul.

You are welcome although to be clear, I had nothing to do with the change. I am just bug triaging. Closing this bug report for now. Reopen if you find this unresolved when you update to the latest version in Fedora 15 branch.
