Description Pablo Iranzo Gómez 2011-03-11 17:58:58 UTC
Description of problem:
On Lenovo X200 with gnome-shell, when login from gdm, I get a desktop with background but no other element, I can press several keys, but CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE doesn't work, just CTRL-UP / CTRL-DOWN.

For getting an usable session I must rpm -e gnome-shell --nodeps, then start session again, enter into 'System information/ Graphics / Force alternate mode' then install gnome-shell again.

From that point I can exec gnome-shell --replace and everything seems to work right

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

gnome-shell.x84-64

0:2.91.91-1.fc15

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. On system information/graphics unset force alternate mode
2. logoff
3. logon
4. you'll get a desktop with background but with no top menu, etc.
5. switch to VT2
6. login as root
7. init 3
8. rpm -e gnome-shell --nodeps
9. init 5
10 login using your user
11 on system information/graphics/ force use alternate mode
12 install gnome-shell
13 exec gnome-shell --replace

Actual results:
Empty desktop

Expected results:
Normal desktop as the one I get starting in alternate mode then replacing with gnome-shell

Additional info:

¿How can provide more information from my system on this?

This is not the very first time It happens and I had to use this same method to get a working desktop. Doesn't happen on other computers I've tested.

Regards
Pablo

Comment 1 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 17:35:59 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
