Description Reartes Guillermo 2011-03-11 22:11:16 UTC
Description of problem:

Everyrtime i want to open a file or save a file, before the
file dialog appears, the dvd unit spin ups "brrrrruuuUUUUUMMM"
It takes betwen 3 or 5 seconds, and my dvd rw is very noisy.

The problem is that when i want to save a document i dont want to:

* either hear the noise (it is not fedora's fault of course. that
is a model specific asus "dis-feature")
* nor have to wait 3 o 5 seconds for the dialog to show-up (remember win9x...)

There is no way to save to a cd/dvd, since it is a read-only medium. (i do use
k3b to write to cd/dvd rw)

It is a minor issue, but it makes me remove the dvd from the drive as son as it
happens the first time.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
udisks.x86_64 1.0.1-8.fc15

How reproducible:
allways

Steps to Reproduce:
1. put a cdrom (read only) in the drive (any media will do, this is the best
example)
2. select save as... in some kde program
3. wow! the cdrom spin ups!!!
   * i am 100% sure i will not save a txt from kwrite to a read-only media!!!

Actual results:
to much unwanted noise and waiting time

Expected results:
silent computing, unless explicity using the dvd/cd unit.
maybe it must be spin up uppon the user clicking the cd/dvd entry in dolphin instead, Maybe

Any news on this?

The problem is much worse on any laptop (since the spin-up time is longer).
It is really annoying to have to wait for saving a file in /home for de dvd/cd unit to spin-up....for no good reason.

In previous fedora versions (like 13) this problem did not exist.

It does still happen on both F16 and F17.

It is really annoying when using a laptop.

I don't know what is causing this but it's not udisks. If it's any help, this is not happening in GNOME either so I guess KDE or something is to blame. Good luck. Closing
