Description Jon Masters 2011-03-21 16:15:32 UTC
Description of problem:

Currently, it is possible to install RHEL6 without having the LSB compliant components on the system. This means that using commands such as:

lsb_version

To portably determine the Operating System version installed are not possible. This should be corrected if possible. If there are too many dependencies, we should investigate what dependencies are necessary, and change packaging.

Jon.

Of course, I mean lsb_release in the above.

This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for
inclusion in the current release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Because the affected component is not scheduled to be updated
in the current release, Red Hat is unfortunately unable to
address this request at this time. Red Hat invites you to
ask your support representative to propose this request, if
appropriate and relevant, in the next release of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux. If you would like it considered as an
exception in the current release, please ask your support
representative.

Installing the LSB bits on top of core gets you:

Transaction Summary
================================================================================
Install 121 Package(s)

Total download size: 120 M
Installed size: 389 M

which includes multiple daemons, additional encryption libraries (that's fun for FIPS cert), and other things.

Now, some of this is due to subpar packaging (the core LSB package requires the graphics and printing subsets, at the request of the LSB, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=585947#c4), but even if that issue is fixed against the LSB's request, it's still going to bring in perl, cvs, and at least one additional daemon (at) above and beyond what's in the minimal install.

Note that it is installed in every single install choice aside from minimal.
