Description Martin 2011-03-23 15:47:59 UTC
Monitor mode doesn't work in Fedora 15 Alpha for RT73USB based devices. The interface comes up and the system lets the user configure the interface, but when running tcpdump, no traffic can be seen for the interface.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Insert a RT73USB device in a USB port.
2. ifconfig -a (to determine if device was detected and to determine the interface name - we assume here that interface name is wlan1)
2. ifconfig wlan1 down
3. iwconfig wlan1 mode monitor
4. iwconfig wlan1 channel 9
5. ifconfig wlan1 up
6. tcpdump -i wlan1

Actual results:
No traffic is reported by tcpdump, although there should be at least probe request/response.

Expected results:
We should see some traffic.

Additional info:
Test was performed on IBM ThinkPad T61p. The rt73usb-firmware package was present (package rt73usb-firmware-1.8.8.fc15.noarch.rpm was installed at install time).

Does this device ever worked in monitor mode ? for example in F14 ?
At least I can have iwl3945 to work, but I'm not sure if every wireless device has monitor mode implemented.

Are you sure to have updated f15 kernel ? which is the component involved here.

Yes, the RT73USB device worked in monitor mode in Fedora 14. I have tested several devices in Fedora 15 Alpha and they all work except for RT73USB. Tested successfully were: Intel 4965AGN, RT2670, Atheros 5004, Atheros 9170 and RT3070. As reported in another bug report, the RT3070 can only monitor 802.11b and 802.11g, not 802.11n.

I have tested with the latest available kernel 2.6.38-1.fc5.i686.

I am not sure which component is failing the RT73USB to work in monitor mode. Is it the rt73usb-firmware RPM, or is it the driver code that is embedded in the kernel? Probably the latter.

I tested rt73usb in monitor mode and it worked fine here, does it still not work for you on updated kernel?

Where is 3070 11n bug report?

I encountered this problem in Fedora 15 Alpha, but this problem was fixed in the final release of Fedora 15. I think this problem should be closed.
