I updated only the intel driver (xorg-x11-driver-intel) to fedora 15 one and it allowed me to plug and unplug the external monitor without hanging the system. If it could be backported to fedora 14 it would be great, if not I will have to wait until fedora 15 :( Have the same issue on a DELL Latitude E5410. My smolt profile is: http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_f312ee41-deaa-4a27-af3f-d83a901782ce I am currently running kernel version 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686. This allows me to unplug the monitor at least a couple of times before freezing. A few changes were rolled back for later versions of the the kernel right up to kernel version 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686. This rollback appears to have made the issue worse and causes the system to freeze immediately on plugging in or unplugging an external monitor. (In reply to comment #1) > I updated only the intel driver (xorg-x11-driver-intel) to fedora 15 one and > it allowed me to plug and unplug the external monitor without hanging the > system. Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue. Please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, and attach * your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available), * X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) * output of the dmesg command, and * system log (/var/log/messages) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above. We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information. Thanks in advance. I have attached two sets of files, each set as described below: Steps: - Clean boot, external monitor attached - Files prefixed with cb_ are immediately after booting - Detached external monitor, system remained responsive - Re-attached external monitor immediately, system continued to remain responsive - Worked on the system for a few minutes - Detached external monitor, system freezes - Attempted restart using escape sequence (Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace) to no avail - Attempted to move to shell mode to no avail - Performed a hard power-off of the machine - Re-connected external monitor - Re-booted system, all files with ab_ prefix are after the freeze Addition Info: I do not have a xorg.conf, so it is not part of the attachments. Do let me know if there is anything else that you need! Created attachment 499880 [details]

(In reply to comment #1) > If it could be backported to fedora 14 it would be great, if not I will have to > wait until fedora 15 :( I am afraid we won't do major rebase for Fedora 14. Not sure whether this functionality couldn't (and actually will be) backported. I'm on Fedora 15 and the issue is still there. If I boot the laptop and I wait on the grub console I can plug and unplug the VGA cable as much as I want without any hang. At anytime after selecting a kernel and while booting I can hang the laptop completely. I tried to add the drm.debug=0x04 without any success. The Fedora 15 kernel is 2.6.41.4-1.fc15.x86_64 I compiled a kernel 3.1.8 from sources with .config from /boot/config-2.6.41.4-1.fc15.x86_64 and "make oldconfig" to update them. After a "make", "make modules_install" and moving the kernel (and generating the initramfs with dracut[1]) I was able to boot with the new kernel but the problem is still there. Before using Fedora that laptop was using Ubuntu without any problem (Fedora 14 was the first version installed, so probably the Ubuntu version before the switch was 10.10). [1] there's any step-to-step process on how to update and create it? Fedora 15 has reached it's end of life as of June 26, 2012. As a result, we will not be fixing any remaining bugs found in Fedora 15. In the event that you have upgraded to a newer release and the bug you reported is still present, please reopen the bug and set the version field to the newest release you have encountered the issue with. Before doing so, please ensure you are testing the latest kernel update in that release and attach any new and relevant information you may have gathered. Thank you for taking the time to file a report. We hope newer versions of Fedora suit your needs. Unfortunately is still true with Fedora 17, even worse (well at least is not random), any version of Ubuntu that previously was working does freeze too. Later I was thinking that, obviously, the laptop came with Windows 7 preinstalled and as usual there are quite a few, kind of hidden, partitions. At some point in time we completely removed all partitions. I don't remember if that was when it was already hanging or just before it. Still, later on, we reinstalled Windows 7 on it and Windows does not freeze at any time when plugging or unplugging the external monitor... Maybe does not help at all, but maybe it does, hopefully! This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '17'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed. |
