Description Svarog 2011-03-31 10:06:52 UTC
Description of problem:
I've created Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit guest using virt-manager. Default domain configuration has Serial Port with PTY device type. But there are no serial ports in Windows Device Manager. Also I've tried named pipe and file types. In vain.
Installing vioserial driver from virtio-win package also doesn't solve the problem. Seems that serial port is simply doesn't exist for my Windows 2008 guest.
Trying to understand the reason of a problem I've created Windows XP 32-bit guest. There serial port revealed in the Device Manager without any extra driver and works fine!

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
libvirt version: 0.8.1
virtio-win version: 1.1.16

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create KVM domain with Windows Server 2008 R2 x86_64 guest
2. Add Serial Port (with any device type) to domain configuration
3. See that there is no way to communicate with serial port from guest

Additional info:
Please let me know if any additional info will be helpful. Also I'll appreciate if you suggest me any temporary workaround to make serial port work.

Sorry this never received a response. Libvirt + qemu + virtio-win have drastically changed in the past 5 years so there's a good chance this is no longer an issue. Closing as DEFERRED, if anyone can still reproduce with latest virt packages please file a new bug
