Nils, isn't this the atexit() in libsane destroying the global state? Which atexit() do you mean? I've checked libsane as well as the backend shared objects and didn't find a reference to that symbol (the only use of atexit() I found is in the DomainOS SANE domain server, but that doesn't apply to Linux).
