dmesg from VESA mode on 2.6.38.1 none

Description gcarter 2011-04-13 16:41:08 UTC
Created attachment 491834 [details]
dmesg from VESA mode on 2.6.38.1

Description of problem:

Fedora 14/15(beta) with stock 2.6.38.2 kernel fails on a 2GPU system, ATI 3870x2. This was tested on the Fedoras 15 Beta, as well as Fedora 14 by building a kernel manually.

System will work however, if the modesetting flag is turned off. However, Xorg will engage the Vesa driver which, then results in a very poor web browsing experience on anything but a very small monitor.

Flash also becomes pretty much not useable.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Kernel 2.6.38, .1, .2 any version of the xorg-ati ddx module.

How reproducible:

On Fedora 15, boot BETA install DVD and you will get a black screen unless you install with basic video. This is a crash of some sort, but I could not get a display to report anything.

Actual results:
Kernel Crash, Black Screen

Expected results:
Kernel that boots to login

Additional info:
I have attached a dmesg of my current machine.

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, and attach (from attempts both with and without nomodeset)

* your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available),
* X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)
* output of the dmesg command, and
* system log (/var/log/messages)

to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Update:

2.6.38.3 has solved the problem. System now boots, and I no longer get a crash.

I suspect it will solve the problem in Fedora 15 as well, if a 2.6.38.3 is used by the installer environment.

Going to test with the Beta Release tonight.

Closing reopen if it's still not working with lastest.
