Description Benjamin Bellec 2011-04-14 18:41:18 UTC
Description of problem:
I use Fedora 15 x86-32 (all is update). When I boot on the fc15's 2.6.38 kernel there is no problem. But when I boot on the fc16's 2.6.39-rc kernel (manually installed from koji) the sound freeze. When I play a game or listen to music, the sound is normal during several seconds (up to 2 minutes approximately). And suddenly, the sound constantly repeats the same "sample" (1 - 2 second approximately).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.39-0.rc3.git2.0.fc16 (also with previous rc1 and rc2)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot on 2.6.39-rc kernel
2. execute something with sound playing
3. wait for "freeze"

Actual results:
Sound freeze.

Expected results:
Normal sound playing.

Additional info:
Tested on x86 and x86-PAE, but not on x86-64.
My sound chip is: 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 02)
The freeze doesn't freeze the system. It's only the sound. Good to know: when the program which played the sound is closed, the freeze continue playing indefinitely.

I retried with rc4. Idem.

It looks like the freeze happens only when playing from a GUI (eg. Totem, VLC, etc.). When I play on CLI (eg. ogg123, play, paplay, etc.) there is no problem.

Comment 2 Benjamin Bellec 2011-04-25 09:13:21 UTC
There is no freeze within ogg123, play, paplay. But with gst123 yes (a GStreamer based command line media player).

Also, there is no problem at all with a Nforce2 Audio controller (tested on another PC).

Comment 3 Benjamin Bellec 2011-05-07 11:25:09 UTC
This is now solved with kernel 2.6.39-rc6 and/or F15 updates.
