Description Julio Entrena Perez 2011-04-20 11:42:34 UTC
Description of problem:
Unless *all* registers are restored to pre-PXE status, localboot doesn't work. We are clobbering DS, ESI and EDX when chainloading an NBP, which means that localboot won't work in the chainloaded NBP.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
syslinux-3.11-4

How reproducible:
Always on specific IBM machines:
x3850 M2 (7141)
x3650 (7979)(only those with E5405 Quad-core CPUs)
HS21 (8853) (only those with E5405 Quad-core CPUs).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. PXE boot one of the mentioned servers.
2. Select localboot option.
3.

Actual results:
The network boot sequence starts over again.

Expected results:
The system boots from localdisk.

Comment 1 RHEL Program Management 2011-08-05 12:36:34 UTC
This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for inclusion in a Red
Hat Enterprise Linux maintenance release. Product Management has requested
further review of this request by Red Hat Engineering, for potential
inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Update release for currently deployed
products. This request is not yet committed for inclusion in an Update
release.

Comment 3 David Cantrell 2011-10-10 19:17:44 UTC
Further investigation has revealed we cannot fix this issue without an entire rebase of syslinux in RHEL-5. Doing so at this point is too risky for a problem that has a documented workaround:

http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?brand=5000008&lndocid=MIGR-5084755

The problem has been fixed upstream, so RHEL-6 and later should not exhibit this problem.
