Likeli duplicate of #703409 (same thing w/ F14) and also #705892 (?) This bug is until now unresolved. Also the newest Fedora 16 prerelease has this bug. In Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 works this perfectly. It's possible for me to start 'leafpad' (xfce editor) from root console (Terminal + 'su -') in F17 Beta. Maybe you want to re-check?
