Description Jason Ash 2011-05-12 18:53:52 UTC
Description of problem:
I freshly installed Fedora 15 RC1, and rebooted. After finishing with the post-installation questions and submitting my hardware profile (graphically), the hourglass icon flashed in the top left corner of the screen alternating with a console message. The Xserver graphics did not start, and the system hanged with just the text "[1.005304][drm] nouveau 0000:02:00.0: Pointer to BIT loadval table invalid." If I press the enter key, then the cursor goes down one line but nothing else happens. I can press cntr + alt + del to reboot the system, but after loading with the fedora "balloon" splash screen, it just does the same thing where the hour glass and this message flashes, then the system hangs.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 15 x86_64 RC1 installation from net install cd

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 15 RC1 x86_64 from net install cd (the only installation media available as of now) on a computer with a Nvidia G240 PCI-e graphics card.
2. Reboot the system after successfully restarting, and answer the post-installation questions (add a user, submit hardware profile, and click "Finish")
3. The hourglass and the message above alternate flashing several times, then the system just hangs with the message above. Reproducible upon every restart.

Actual results:
Xserver will not start and the system hangs with a message.

Expected results:
Xserver to start, Gnome login screen to appear.

Additional info: How do I start Fedora in some sort of safe/recovery mode if you need additional info or files attached for this bug?

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, and attach

* your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available),
* X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)
* output of the dmesg command, and
* system log (/var/log/messages)

to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

/etc/Xorg.conf.d/

The directory /etc/X11/ did not have a file named xorg.conf, so I found a directory called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, and this is the only file in it.

I attached these files while using Ubuntu on a separate hard drive. Therefore, I have not yet tried booting the kernel by adding drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command. I will do this and try to get the output of the dmesg next. I hope getting the logs from Ubuntu didn't mess up tracking down the bug. Thanks.

I have the same problem with Fedora 15 live-cd (not RC)
I can't install system, because it hangs up while loading. If i can give some additional information about this problem, just ask. BTW I installed Fedora 14 on this computer without any problems.

Probably not the same issue, please file a new bug report.

The message from nouveau is harmless, I think I'll remove it actually so people don't thing it's an error..

I don't see any other indication nouveau is at fault, just that gnome-session is crashing repeatedly. Reassigning.

Comment 21 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-06 20:06:05 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
