Are you by chance killing xfdesktop to change backgrounds?

No. I use shell script with 
xfconf-query -c xfce4-desktop -p /backdrop/screen0/monitor0/image-path -s  $slkst

statement. I realy do nothing but sometime bugzilla run and i report bug. Today also i have 2 bug in kernel. Both reported.
