Description Scott Castaline 2011-05-21 03:28:12 UTC
Description of problem:When configuring a hp network printer (Officejet 6500 E710n-z) through system-config-printer you are not given a choice of drivers once the make & model has been selected. It also does not show which driver is being used for the printer. I had to go through CUPS (localhost:631) to change the driver from hplip for CUPS to hpijs. The hplip driver is also broken but I believe that that would be a seperate bug.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):1.3.2

How reproducible:Fairly consistent. I deleted all printers and tried again several times with the same results.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start system-config-printer (Printer Admin Tool)
2.Select Server->New->Printer
3.Select Network Printer option (Wired with JetDirect)
4.Manually enter the IP address of printer for URL:
5.Select HP and Officejet6500 Series
6.Add Printer

Actual results:Added printer with the hplip for cups driver even though there were other drivers available.

Expected results:At some point the software should display a list of drivers found for that printer and allow the operator to chose which one they want to use.

Additional info:I had problems with the hplip variant of driver which is what led me to attempt to change it to another driver. As stated before I had to through CUPS to change it to the hpijs variant.

If you mean 'automatically selected', then yes that's true.
When s-c-printer is able to recognize the make & model of printer and assign the most suitable driver for it then the user is not asked to 'confirm or select another one' because we want it to be the 'just works' way.

> It also does not show which driver is being used for the printer.
double-click on the added printer queue and see 'Make and Model'

> I had to go through CUPS (localhost:631) to change

double-click on the added printer queue and click on 'Change...' to change 'Make and Model'. There you should (it works here) be able to select another driver.

Can you attach an output from printing troubleshooter when using that driver ?

I'm little bit confused right now.
So did you select make & model manually (in that case you have to be able to select also the driver) ?
Or was it selected automatically ?

Only when s-c-printer is unable to select driver automatically.
We want it to 'just work' otherwise.

I manually selected make & model it did not give me a choice of hplip or hpijs drivers. When I started noticing the color ink issues I went in to change driver and it again never showed the 2 drivers. When I wnet into CUPS via Firefox (URL localhost:631) I was able to modify my printer and it automatically displayed the model and listed 2 drivers, hplip and hpijs. Selecting hpijs corrected the color ink problem. I hope that makes it a bit clearer. If not I can try it again, it's just that when I use the hplip driver it really sucks up the blue ink and that is not in my budget this month:-)

Could you please attach a screenshot of system-config-printer only showing the hplip driver, and not hpijs? It's working as expected here for me...

Okay, just tried it again through system-config-printer I went to change the driver. When I selected to change make and model the dialog box pooped to select make then another dialog box popped up with 2 panes the left with the the model of my printer highlighted, and the right pane which was not showing up before lists both hplip cups and hpijs with the prior as the preferred one to use, which seems to be broken for my printer. I have made several changes to the Gnome3 Shell, such as the Theme used and added the Dock extension and using nautilus to draw the desktop. I don't know why or if that would affect this utility.

All I know is that the right pane was definitely not there originally, it now appears more like the version used in F14.

Comment 5 Tim Waugh 2011-05-23 15:15:11 UTC
Was it definitely the same program, or was it perhaps the new GNOME 3 'printers' part of the control center, i.e. clicking the "Printers" icon from the System Settings window?

Comment 6 Scott Castaline 2011-05-24 14:06:46 UTC
Nope, I definitely used the CLI to access system-config-printer. My very 1st try was with an early Alpha LiveCD I used that utility and found it to be very limiting, never used it since. My usual approach to installing my HP printers has been to use hp-setup 1st and then use system-config-printer to make additional tweaks to the configuration. This time hp-setup didn't work so I next tried system-config-printer to configure the printer. It wasn't until I started printing and found problems with the printed material is when I started looking for other drivers for the printer. As I said my 1st attempts were failures and it didn't list any alternate drivers, I seem to remember that right pane was there but blank or greyed out. I don't remember any difference of overall dimensions of the dialogue box.

Okay, strange. As it's working for you now I'll close this as RAWHIDE, but please re-open if you see it again.

That'll be fine. I am on my F14 system right now and I do have a F15 VM that I'll check out later to see how that one is responding as well. I have not made any changes to that one as that runs in Failback mode instead of in the shell. My prior observations was on my F15 bare metal machine.
