Description Chris Rankin 2011-05-28 16:45:31 UTC
Description of problem:
The gnome-sound-applet does not start automatically when I login using "Classic GNOME with Compiz" mode.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
control-center-3.0.1.1-5.fc15.i686

How reproducible:
All the time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select "Classic GNOME with Compiz" mode at login screen.
2. Login

Actual results:
gnome-sound-applet is not started.

Expected results:
The applet should be visible in the top-left corner of the screen, by the username.

Additional info:
The /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-sound-applet.desktop file contains the following line:

AutostartCondition=GNOME3 if-session gnome-fallback

Commenting this line out fixes the problem.

Actually, there are three files in /etc/xdg/autostart which use this construct:

$ grep 'GNOME3 if' /etc/xdg/autostart/*
/etc/xdg/autostart/bluetooth-applet.desktop:AutostartCondition=GNOME3 if-session gnome-fallback
/etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-fallback-mount-helper.desktop:AutostartCondition=GNOME3 if-session gnome-fallback
/etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-sound-applet.desktop:AutostartCondition=GNOME3 if-session gnome-fallback

I don't know if the gnome-fallback-mount-helper is useful in compiz/AWN. I've never seen it do anything when it's enabled.

IMHO, the AutostartCondition is totally broken if you're not using GNOME3. It overrides the manual X-GNOME-Autostart flags, so it must be commented out to manually control these applets with gnome-session-properties. Most bugs from other systems recommend copying the bluetooth and sound applet files to ~/.config/autostart and commenting the line out. If AutostartCondition was a list like the OnlyShowIn construct, it could be written as "GNOME; GNOME3 if-session gnome-fallback;". Another fix would be to let the X-GNOME-Autostart flags override it.

This bug is alive and well in Fedora 16 with gnome-session-3.2.1-2.fc16 and this is gnome-session which is responsible for handling that condition. That despite that a package changelog contains these lines:

* Mon Feb 28 2011 Matthias Clasen <mclasen> 2.91.90-5
- Make the new if-session Autostart condition work

It does not work. I cannot check rawhide as there gnome-session is currently entirely broken and does not start.

Apart of three files from /etc/xdg/autostart/ mentioned in comment #1 there is also one from gnome-session. Namely /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-authentication-agent.desktop which includes lines:

Exec=/usr/libexec/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
AutostartCondition=GNOME3 if-session gnome-fallback

That is not running as well. How to check if "gnome-fallback" key is a correct one?

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 17:14:08 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 21:42:03 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
