Description Miloslav Trmač 2011-05-30 11:06:31 UTC
Description of problem:
Given a single monitor, I have:
* a gnome-terminal in the top left corner
* Two emacs windows, each vertically maximized, beside each other
(i.e. two emacs "columns" on the screen").

When I need to edit something in the right emacs window based on output on gnome-terminal, I have to *click* on the right emacs window to give it focus.

When I use alt-tab to switch to the right emacs window, the left emacs window is brought forward, and it hides the gnome-terminal window.

There is no reason why the independent emacs windows should be both brought forward, and gnome-shell apparently can bring up only one of them based on the mouse behavior; but having to switch to the mouse only to change focus is rather frustrating.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-shell-3.0.2-1.fc15.x86_64
mutter-3.0.2.1-1.fc15.x86_64

Using alt-` (key above Tab) works around this problem. Alt-Tab seems to focus all windows of an application. Alt-` focuses individual windows.

I can't see how. When _any_ of the emacs windows is focused, all are raised over the gnome-terminal window.

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 17:42:52 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Still seeing this in gnome-shell-3.4.1-5.fc17.x86_64 , a constant annoyance.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.

and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Comment 8 Miloslav Trmač 2014-01-02 15:57:46 UTC
For the record, this is not an issue in the "Classic" session, I don't know about the other one.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2014-02-05 22:41:41 UTC
Fedora 18 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2014-01-14. Fedora 18 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
