Description AvatarSmith 2011-06-05 06:42:53 UTC
Description of problem:
Finally installed F15 after its long awaited release, bottom line GNOME 3 is a dozen steps retarted in development. I know from reading several posts that no one is truly happy with it except a select few. My three major gripes, 1) GNOME.ORG stuck its head in the sand and responds to critisim by terminating threads. (not me personally) 2) The min requirments for F15 are not corret needing a 3D accelerator, why would I want a high end graphics card for a simple desktop or server console?... worked fine with gnome 2, now I'm stuck with a hamstrung desktop.
3) Standard layout for me was terminal icons, drive icons and sysmon to keep an eye on my services, I cant help it that some people cant organize thier workspace and now have to have endure restrictive enviorment.

Normally an admin(root or otherwise) does not have a desktop open, when you have several dozen taskes to perform its great, but that and application development have now taken a back seat. I hate to say it, but if Fedora 16 has gnome3 with its gnome 2 heritage gutted out, and it makes itnot the EL space, rh.centos, then I'll have to dump it as unusable. You may say...switch to kde, but you know as well as I do the vast majority of apps / dev envs are centered on gnome.

While I understand your frustration, a random bug report against 'distrubtion' isn't really the proper avenue for 1) any potential changes of GNOME 3's direction 2) any potential switches of what Fedora's default desktop is.

With respect to your specific concerns, the most actionable of them is the graphics requirement. This is currently being worked on - the idea is that software rendering should be good enough for the desktop in many cases. Assigning to the relevant component for that.

Thank you, I was not able to find the appropriate venue to list this against, I really hope that the Fedora team will be able to inspire the Gnome team to respect the verstilitiy Gnome 2 represented in Gnome 3+. If not, I humbly and sincerely ask the Fedora team to consider its removal in FC16 with appropriate apps ported to something else.

Software gnome-shell is landed in F17, although it could use some work.
