Description udo 2011-06-13 07:01:21 UTC
Description of problem:
We get the Gnome classic desktop instead of Gnome 3 gnome-shell

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-shell-3.0.2-1.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:
Upgrade Fedora 14 to Fedora 15.
Log in, choose GNOME and notice the clasic menu's.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade Fedora 14 to Fedora 15.
2. Log in, choose GNOME and notice the clasic menu's.
3.

Actual results:
clasic menu's.

Expected results:
Gnome-shell with effects

Additional info:
gnome-shell --replace does give us more or less the situation we want.
The hardware (ATI Radeon HD3200) is capable.
So, are any rpms missing?

$ /usr/libexec/gnome-session-check-accelerated-helper; echo $?
0

$ xprop -root _GNOME_SESSION_ACCELERATED
_GNOME_SESSION_ACCELERATED(CARDINAL) = 0

$ xprop -root -remove _GNOME_SESSION_ACCELERATED
$ /usr/libexec/gnome-session-check-accelerated

Found this link: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=933069
Removed the 'user' file as mentioned.
And then, on login, Gnome displays the window saying that Gnome failed to load (probably due to hardware) which I doubt very much.
So how does Gnome decide what hardware is OK?

Comment 4 udo 2011-06-14 15:36:18 UTC
as we see:
# rpm -qf /usr/libexec/gnome-session-check-accelerated
gnome-session-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64

we think this might be closer to the cause.

Comment 5 udo 2011-06-14 15:37:45 UTC
BTW: git xf86-video-ati.

Comment 6 udo 2011-06-14 15:44:11 UTC
[root@recorder xf86-video-ati]# lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] [1002:9710]

Comment 8 udo 2011-06-14 16:13:33 UTC
And that fixed the issue.
Why doesn't it log about this?
Very hard to debug, if at all.

Comment 9 udo 2011-06-14 17:00:52 UTC
So please, please add way more logging for any and every way that gnome-session can fail, fail to detect, etc.

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 18:26:34 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
