Terminal output when running NetworkManager from terminal

Description of problem:
When I first boot up Fedora 15, I am able to connect successfully using my 3G Sierra Wireless 890 AirCard (ExpressCard) modem. I am able to use it fine for 1-3 hours, then I lose internet connectivity. NetworkManager is still showing a good connection and my modem lights are on steady as they should be, but there is no connectivity. I am unable to reconnect except by doing a cold boot.

If I choose to turn Mobile Broadband off, it will show as disconnected in NetworkManager. After a minute or two one of the modem lights starts flashing, indicating that I am no longer connected to the network. If I try to reconnect, it never will.

If I reboot without turning the laptop off, the modem lights stay on throughout the entire process and I am unable to make a connection in Fedora or Mageia. If I shut the computer down, then do a cold boot I am able to connect again normally. In Mageia 1 KDE I never have this problem using kppp. In Fedora I am running the Gnome D.E.. AFAIK, this problem has existed since the initial install of Fedora 15. This is on a Lenovo X220 ThinkPad. FWIW, I have the built in WiFi modem shut off with the hardware switch.

Fedora 14 Gnome running on an IBM T42 ThinkPad with a Sierra Wireless 881 AirCard (Cardbus) 3G modem did not exhibit this problem. I have not installed Fedora 15 on that laptop to test. Fedora 14 will not run on my new X220.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
NetworkManager-0.8.9997-5.git20110702.fc15.x86_64
ModemManager-0.4.998-1.git20110706.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:
Boot up and connect my Mobil Broadband modem from the NetworkManager applet in the top taskbar. After 1-3 hours internet connectivity is broken. Seems to happen sooner if I leave the laptop for a time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot up and make mobile broadband connection from NetworkManager applet
2. Allow 1 to 3 hours to elapse, using the internet or not and connection is lost.
3. Unable to reestablish internet connection with mobile broadband modem without completely shutting down computer then doing a cold boot up.

Actual results:
NetworkManager loses all control of 3G mobile broadband modem after 1 or 2 hours elapse.

Expected results:
NetworkManager to retain control of 3G mobile broadband modem so that I can close the connection and reconnect if there is a problem.

Do you see any errors/messages related to the modem in 'dmesg' output around the time of disconnecting?

Comment 4 David Batson 2011-07-28 19:30:20 UTC
Here following are 3 dmesg outputs.
1) dmesg1.txt just after a successful connection.
2) dmesg2.txt after connection was lost. Modem lights were both on and NetworkManager showed connection active.
3) dmesg3.txt after disconnecting and trying to reconnect. NetworkManager showed the disconnection but both modem lights stayed on, indicating it was still connected. I tried to reconnect, but it would not. When I went to attempt to reconnect a second time, my mobile broadband adapter had disappeared from NetworkManager.

I restate: In Mageia 1 KDE running kppp I do not have this problem at all. I can stay connected for days. Problem continues in Fedora 15 - fully updated as of yesterday.

The modem is disconnected from USB subsystem:
Jul 22 20:02:01 localhost kernel: [ 9497.524708] usb 2-1.6: USB disconnect, address 3
Jul 22 20:02:01 localhost kernel: [ 9497.525946] sierra ttyUSB4: resubmit read urb failed.(-19)
Jul 22 20:02:01 localhost kernel: [ 9497.526079] sierra ttyUSB3: resubmit read urb failed.(-19)
Jul 22 20:02:01 localhost kernel: [ 9497.526766] sierra ttyUSB0: Sierra USB modem converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
....

There are probably driver issues in kernel. Or maybe also the firmware can cause issues - see bug 500652

Reassigning to kernel.

Are you still seeing this with the 2.6.43/3.3 kernel update?

Comment 11 Josh Boyer 2012-07-11 17:53:17 UTC
Fedora 15 has reached it's end of life as of June 26, 2012. As a result, we will not be fixing any remaining bugs found in Fedora 15.

In the event that you have upgraded to a newer release and the bug you reported is still present, please reopen the bug and set the version field to the newest release you have encountered the issue with. Before doing so, please ensure you are testing the latest kernel update in that release and attach any new and relevant information you may have gathered.

Thank you for taking the time to file a report. We hope newer versions of Fedora suit your needs.
